DIRTY MOVIES

8 weeks, beginning February 10. 2007

TUITION: $425 for 8 week course + $25 materials fee

DESCRIPTION:  Learn all the ins and outs of making adult cinema, from finding actors, to writing an engaging porn script, to getting the right shots, keeping it legal, and then exposing it to the world.

GOALS: To educate thoughtful independent porn producers in order to diversify and improve the adult video industry, and to illuminate the many issues surrounding the business of making porn. To help students in the creation of their own adult content and means of distribution, for pleasure and/or profit.

PREREQUISITES:  A sincere and mature interest in the adult video industry and independent pornography.  Access to a video camera and desktop video editing software (iMovie, Vegas, Final Cut, Premiere, Avid, etc.).  Must be over the age of 18 to enroll in this class. No filmmaking experience necessary.

CURRICULUM:

  1. A Brief History of Film/Video Porn - Watching and discussing old stag films, classic pornography from the 1970s, and contemporary examples. Reading theoretic/academic writings regarding the subject of pornography and obscenity.
  2. Law - What are the obscenity laws in your area and how are they determined? A survey of some of the key legal issues regarding obscenity will be examined. Also, what do you need to know to ensure you are within the law regarding record-keeping and other practical considerations?
  3. Digital Porn Production (tech and art) - This is the bulk of the class. It will include beginning hands-on technical workshops on lighting, shooting and editing video (and digital photos), and advice on what equipment to use. It will also include frank discussion about the nature of fantasy, and how to express your fantasies effectively in cinematic terms. Instructor will guide students step-by-step through the production of an adult video, from finding performers to authoring a DVD. Performers will be brought into class, and students will take turns shooting. Work will be viewed and critiqued, providing immediate and valuable feedback.
  4. The Market - Who watches porn, and what are the various niches in the industry? An expansive list of fetishes and target groups will be discussed, and brief examples will be screened for the class. We will look at various resources in the industry and strategies for marketing and distributing your work.
  5. The Internet -The last part of the class will be spent examining the Internet as a vehicle for porn distribution. We will take a look at existing web sites, and students will learn how to create their own store for marketing video tapes, and how to set up a pay membership web site and prepare videos and photos for web delivery, as well as Video On Demand options. Basic web design skills will be taught, and instructor will lead students to resources for more advanced education.

FINAL PROJECT: At the end of class each student will be required to present a final pornography project. This can be a DVD, a web site, or a V.O.D. theater. The class will discuss and give an in-depth critique of each project.

* NOTE: When feature length movies are screened, classes may run longer than three hours. Students will have the option of staying late to watch the entire film, or may leave and borrow the DVD/tape at a later date.
